selection of the 5 best DJ software packages

Rane Serato Scratch Live SL3

Serato were early leaders in the digital mixing revolution, and despite increasing competition they have maintained their formidable reputation. The combination of the SL3 hardware and the Serato Scratch Live DJ software allows you to connect up to three regular vinyl turntables, CD players and a mixer to their computer to mix and scratch audio files. It's sold as a complete package consisting of the SL3 audio interface, two control vinyls/CDs, four RCA cables, one USB cable, international power supply, Serato Scratch Live software and a carrying case.

The included control CDs and vinyl have Serato's control signal which Scratch Live uses to track and simulate the same movement within the software. Users coming from a vinyl background will have no difficulty adjusting to this system which, with the Serato timecode, is indistinguishable from playing on vinyl. 24bit/48kHz convertors, USB 2.0 connection and studio grade phono pre-amps ensure high sound quality and an auxiliary input/output lets you get creative by hooking up a sampler, live feed or recording a live mix. The solid build, upgraded audio and hot outputs make the SL3 a regular fixture on the professional DJ circuit, and ensures it justifies its premium price tag.

The Serato Scratch Live software is well laid out with a simple interface split into three main sections. You'll see two decks with waveforms, cue points and loops on the top, effects in the middle and below that the filebrowser. Scratch Live 2.1.1 also has support for the Pioneer CDJ-2000 & CDJ-900s "advanced HID mode" including library navigation, album art, overview display and highly responsive platter control. Support for The Bridge also means that you can play back your Ableton Live sets through Scratch Live and trigger clips from the Ableton Player as well as record your mixtapes as a multitrack Ableton file.

Native Instruments Traktor Scratch Pro
Allowing up to four deck mixing with vinyl and CD control, Traktor Scratch Pro is one of the most complete and feature packed solutions available for digital DJs. With 28 professional effects, automatic beat-gridding of tracks, advanced beat detection and Sync Lock, a comprehensive track management system, as well as support for multiple MIDI controllers, Traktor Scratch Pro certainly doesn't scrimp on features.

The high-end Audio 8 DJ interface is at the heart of the system. With a brushed aluminium casing and a slick black fascia, it certainly looks the part, but with 24 bit/96kHz and Cirrus Logic AD/DA converters, also sounds spot on. The rugged and weighty exterior of the interface and the two small handles which protrude from the front of the unit protect the knobs and buttons and safeguard your investment should it be dropped.

Connecting up is pretty simple thanks to Native Instruments' Multicore cables, which also mean less unsightly entangled cables and a rock-solid sound and performance. Installation of the software is not as effortless as some Digital Vinyl Systems (DVS), however once up and running, use of the Traktor Pro software itself is intuitive and uncomplicated. The layout is clean and uncluttered, the vinyl control is extremely responsive when mixing or scratching, the built-in effects sound fantastic, and the ability to record your mixes within the software is a godsend.

One minor gripe with Traktor would be that the waveform display is slightly small and being only one colour, it's not as easy as other DVS systems to spot breakdowns or changes in the track at a glance. That aside, Traktor Scratch Pro is one of the most serious contenders in the DVS rankings and certainly stands out from the crowd in a seemingly saturated market - no wonder it's the professional's choice.

Ableton Live Suite 8

Suite 8 is the flagship of Ableton's award winning Live Range, and as such is much more than a digital mixing tool. The four-DVD boxed set contains Live 8 itself, a core library of samples and presets, the full set of Ableton's software instruments, a collection of loops and samples from Cycling 74 and Zero-G, a library of Latin percussion instruments and samples, version 2 of the Essential Instruments Collection (EIC), and two DVDs dedicated to session drums. In total there's a possible 48GB, to install so it's worth making sure that you've got sufficient hard disk space.

The options for DJing give the user the ability to mix tracks of completely different genres and tempos seamlessly. Being able to mix an old disco track (originally played using live instruments with variable timing) seamlessly into a dubstep track with total accuracy is mind-blowing. Live sets can also be shared and synchronised with other Ableton users over the internet, via the dedicated file-browser pane.

The creative possibilities for on the fly remixing make Suite 8 unique in its class. You can re-sample in real time or overdub jam using Live's comprehensive range of VST instruments and sound libraries, allowing you to add improvised tracks to your DJ set, or to add edits of your favourite records to your live set.

It doesn't stop there though - Live 8 offers numerous hi-specification features such as powerful MIDI sequencing of software and hardware instruments, 32-bit/192 kHz multitrack recording, and effect racks for professional-grade mixing and mastering. Combine all this with Ableton's completely unique warping and real-time time-stretching capabilities, high grade synthesis generators, instrument and drum racks, and effectively you've got a both a digital DJ set-up and a complete studio in one.

M Audio Torq Conectiv Vinyl/CD Pack
After a 12 year run of gracing the pro audio market with high performance interfaces and controllers, M Audio have entered the digital DJ software space-race. It's a somewhat surprising entry, especially when you take in to account the recent technological advances made by the likes of Rane & Native Instruments alongside the increasing number of budget imitations. A quick look at the impressive list of features and specifications quickly reassures you that this system does not fit into the latter category.

Out of the box the Conectiv USB interface connects with two pairs of RCA stereo inputs and outputs. It contains a pre-amp for connecting to turntables, a 1/4" TRS microphone input and headphone out. The top panel boasts two large, firm knobs which allow you to seamlessly mix between the incoming analog audio from a turntable or CD player and the digital output of a connected Mac or PC. There are also line switches and a mic/monitor control room. Although the unit is made from plastic it doesn't feel too cheap.

Once installed, the software appears to be intuitively laid out, although the small function icons take a little while to get used to. Just like its counterparts, you can mix with control vinyl, CD or internally if you choose. Torq's browser will scan your computer's iTunes database and supports Apple Lossless files alongside the usual WAV, MP3, AIFF, WMA, AAC file formats. The waveform display is not to everyone's liking as it is split in half, making the peaks the only real point of reference. However its large size and zoom features make this manageable and the addition of a second, smaller full waveform on each deck make adding up to six cue points per track easy enough. There's an impressive amount of on-screen knobs and buttons which can be controlled by mouse, keyboard or MIDI controller. The centre-piece of these is the effects module, which aside from being bundled with ten basic effects will also load third party VST plug-ins. The tempo-synced sampler is a tasty feature which allows loaded samples to be manipulated on the fly and you can route the output of Torq to any ReWire-compatible host application (like Pro Tools M-Powered 7.3 or later) and share synchronization information between the programs. Some users may gripe about the fact that Torq only supports two decks overall, but somehow you get the sense that any more would over complicate this already feature packed little system.

MixVibes CROSS Pack
The Mixvibes Cross Pack can be safely filed in the 'lesser known DJ software' category, but is well worth investigating. It boasts an impressive audio interface, which comes with a 4-In/6-Out soundcard that allows you to use it with the included timecode CDs and records. Earlier scratch systems had teething problems - losing the loop - because of the timecode quality, prompting Mixvibes to invent the quote-unquote 'Ultimate Timecode CD'. Alternatively you can use Cross with your preferred MIDI controller.

Beneath the essential channel equalizers Cross lets you loop tracks in different steps from 16 to 1/8 bars. You can set locators that you can jump to, play the track in reverse mode or use the match and sync options. While using timecode media the smart anti-skip feature is very handy: if you are scratching and the needle bounces there is no interrupted sound in relative mode. Those who are looking for breakdowns can see the waveform of both tracks in the player and can zoom in or out to find a view that suits your needs.

There are several different ways to manage your media. The master media library allows you to add all your tracks and organise them by BPM, or you can use the media explorer if your tracks are stored in a clear structure on your computer. The iTunes integration allows you to import your whole iTunes library into Cross, playlists and all. If you mark a track in the collection, playlist or explorer you can see its cover and all information from the id3 tags.

Mixvibes deserve credit for implementing user feedback into new versions of Cross (in the upcoming update, for example, there will be three different effects voted by Mixvibes users). The popular Mixvibes forum is also a handy resource if you have trouble setting up your Cross Pack.

BMX Grand National are over.

What does that mean to a BMXer?  Well it normally means the end of the season, but to some it means only a few more races left to get some needed points.

With this being my first year in BMX,  I have met a lot of nice, wonderful and helpful people.  I am starting to figure out the different personality types of BMX parents.

1) The first type of parent are those that constantly scream at there kids to do this and do that.  I see the resentment and pain in the kids eyes.  Yet they do what they are told.  I am not sure how long this type of kid will last in BMX or any sport.  Growing up I always saw these types of kids being the first to drink, then start doing drug.  They felt they were never good enough.  I'm not sure if this type of parent is pushing there kid so they are the best or so they can brag that their kid is the best.

2) The second type of parent is kind of like the first one, but they also give lots of positive strokes.  If you don't pay attention and see the positive strokes you would think they are part of the first group.  I think that this type of parent will do whatever it takes to help their child to be a winner, but at the same time not let the child think all this comes free.  They need to work for their achievements.

3) The third type of parent are those that do the pushing and at the same time they treat their child like a friend.  Their the person with the money to take them anywhere they want to go.  I see this type a parent as being the same as a stage mom, someone living through their child's achievements.  I am guessing that they see it as bonding time.

4) The forth type are the ones that drop the kid at the track and pick them up when they are done.  They may go to the races, but they are not watching or cheering their child on.  When the race is done the child finds them, they don't go to meet them at the finish line.  I don't see many, but I have notice a few.

As for me I am kind of a special case, I could be a 2 or maybe even a 4.  My son is deaf and I could scream at him all I want and it would do no good.  If it were not for all the nice people I have met at the track I have no reason to leave and not be involved.  I take pictures that everyone seems to enjoy.  I even was asked to announce the races one Sunday (I don't envy the regular announcer at all).  I don't care if my son wins or looses, its that he is having fun.  I will point out things he is doing wrong and get advice from others more knowledgeable then myself, after all it is fun to win.  Next year I feel he will be ready to travel away from the home track and start meeting more people around the state and making new friends to talk to on Face Book.

If I had the money for bikes I would probably try it, but I am 50 and have had one heart attack already.  So I am not really sure I want to go there.

Now if any parent reads this that knows me and thinks I am talking about them personally, I am not.  This is strictly observations of the many people I have met this year, I also don't take shots at friends.

Sunday's Fall Classic

If you missed it last Sundays, Fall Classic at Rum River Bmx it was a great time.  I really enjoyed snapping all the cool pic's and the special races.  I thought the fire department was going to show up for a fire, but it was the free Hamburgers and Hot dog's, they were cooking (they were really good while they lasted).
One of the Special Races was the TOT's  races,  they were on little pit bikes, trikes and big wheels.  All the kids were great and I swear some of those trophies were bigger then the winners.  Another Special race was the Father's Race, I actually participated in this one, a few of the other guys kind of pushed me into it.  I had the greatest time ever, even though I thought I was going to die.  I am so out of shape it's terrible, by the way I know round is a shape.  I do want to thank Streeter and Ken for getting me to do it.  I know they want me to start racing so they will have someone new to beat, I could maybe be cool with being the next SodBuster Kenny Jay of BMX.

I am pleased to announce that I now have BMX supplies here from JensonUSA.  They have some really good prices.  If I would have had the money I could hve had a nice pro XL bike for 56% off.  You have to check them out.

Cosmic Gate, one of the most well known electronic music groups of all time

Cosmic Gate, one of the most well known electronic music groups of all time, have announced plans tour North America.
The duo, consisting of Nic Chagall and Bossi, will embark on their largest tour of the US and Canada to date. With their massive successes this year coupled with their remix of the main title theme from AVATAR - (James Horner I See You) Cosmic Gates star power and presence is on the rise.
What may look like an overnight success to some, is in fact the culmination of years of hard work and devotion to dance music. Following a chance meeting at a label office in Cologne in late 1998, the pair collaborated for the first time. Its a production partnership that has become one of the dance worlds most successful and memorable. Collaborations and remixes for EDM peers such as: Tisto, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Above & Beyonds OceanLab project, Paul Van Dyk, Deadmau5, Rank 1, John OCallaghan and Blank & Jones have further exposed Cosmic Gates vast musical talents and definitive sound to millions worldwide.

Add to this a touring calendar with over 100 dates per year, and is clear that this in demand duo is going all the way.
With their fourth studio album still charting (released in 2009, the essential Sign of the Times) and their ongoing compilation mix series Back2Back (released through Black Hole this past March) its easy to see and hear why Cosmic Gate are one of the most influential, respected and sought after acts in electronic music today.

Remaster of the Universe

Hey, It's been a while since I blogged.
I have been busy and digging up some more news for you all.  So here we go,

In celebration of his Remaster of the Universe album launch in room three at fabric on May 29, Norwegian disco beard Todd Terje has offered up his remix of Antena’s track “Camino Del Sol” to get you in the mood.

Remaster of the Universe (Free)

The recent volcanic explosion in Iceland caused chaos for DJs across Europe, with the dust only just beginning to settle from a fortnight of cancellations, rescheduling and daunting overground journeys. Juno Plus scribe Tom Jones – himself stuck in Germany as a result of the flying ban – spoke to some DJs stranded abroad (and at home) about how they were affected, and discovered that every volcanic ash cloud has a silver lining…

Discothèques are going mad for slo-mo disco and house at the moment, and one of the finest purveyors of this music is Graeme Clark, aka The Revenge. The Scotsman has been in rare form this past 12 months, working under a host of solo and collaborative monikers (6th Borough Project, Burnt Island Casuals among others). Juno Plus caught up with Graeme to discuss the art of editing, what he’s got in the production pipeline and Scottish beaches.

Pictures form infected Mushroom

Here is wher you can find some of my pictures from last night Infected Mushroom at Epic. I have more, but I can only put 25 of them up on flikr at a time.

Infected Mushroom @ Epic

I had a good night tonight at Epic, I will tell you why in a little bit why it was not great. The music was all awesome, hats off to all the DJ's. Jeff Hunter did a great job, I love his sets. What I don't understand is why DJ's don't give out CD's like Jeff did tonight. Infected Mushroom was off the hook Crazy. I loved the little Evil Mushrooms on stage and the laser show was a little more then I had ever seen at one of these show. It was very well thought out. Tonight's show was a live set, but being a musician myself I was stuck trying to figure out what was live and what was Memorex. If you get the chance to see there show they do a great job. Since this was my first time ever seeing and hearing them I can't give you a run down of the songs. It was kind of strange I kept thinking I was listening to KMFDM  or Rammstein

The down side of tonight
1) I eventually had people with bad hygiene standing around me

2) A white guy with dread locks who was under age and getting drinks while security was watching. A few times I thought he was going to blow it all out. He was hanging on the monitors to the point that he was pealing the front mesh off of it.

3) A guy pushing maximum density pushed his way to the front and then pushed me and 3 others out of our spot.

4) The special screen used for the Laser Show fell on one side because it looked like a woman by it untied it (but not sure on that).

5) In the VIP/Bottle Service areas they had the rails covered with silver Mylar, which was really cool, but one group took theirs down, and before the end of the show i saw two more go.

What is wrong with all you people? I had a nice spot and I felt violated, which I had never felt before at Epic.
So in short Music was Awesome the crowd sucked.

Before Oakenfold went on D-Struck hit the decks and I do mean hit the decks.  His set was so powerful that a woman jumped up on stage grabbed the front of the futuristic table and shook her booty for all the world to see, she did it twice.  If he would have been spinning Vinyl he would have had a train wreck of a show, I'm sure he was glad ha had digital.

Mixology's founder and House Music Pioneer, DJ Mark Lewis, has been throwing Mixology events at WMC and past 10 years. The LA based Event marketing and branding company has produced the events; Downtown LA Fashion Week and Elton Johns Oscar Party.

Paul Oakenfold was off the hook tonight

Tonight was unbelieveable  The lights, The Giant LED wall that was kind of like a jumbo-tron, and the bass.  If you saw me I was the guy standing just left of center stage and I looked like your father.  I had Steph (some girl who must have come from Heaven) on one side of me and Brett (some guy from Eagan) on the other side.  They were text each other the whole night.  I would have traded places with him, but we both would have lost our front spots.  I don't know if the show sold out, but with all my Tweets on Twitter it should have.  The music was Bomb-Bastic from all the DJ's playing, but I do have to ask one question.

Why do people in the back continue to push towards the stage?  It not like the person that is performing is going to take you home, much less touch you.

I got the feeling that Paul didn't much care for the spot-light, since it was dark for most of his set, some would say it was to show off the video wall behind him.  When the spot-light did hit him he seem to move back to where it was more dimly lit.  Anyways I am pressed against the stage unable to tell if it was man, woman or beast humping me.  One person kept saying he wanted to be where I was and kept putting his hands in my face to get me to move.  I just don't understand fans and why they have to be so rude to get close to someone that really doesn't care to know them.  Don't get me wrong I have talked with the guys from The Crystal  Method, Felix the Housecat and many others, but they were willing to do that, they don't seem to have an issue with their fans.  When Paul was finished he was gone, never did come in front of the decks.  But man what a show, I will try to post my pics of the Go Go Girls tomorrow.

Introducing Hart Thorson

As part of my goals this year I wanted to start interviewing DJ's I would like to present my first one with Hart Thorson.  As a format I will probably use the same 10 QUESTIONS" for all the DJ's unless someone send me other things they would like to know.

Hart Thorson
I think I had seen Hart many times in the clubs opening for some big name.  But it wasn't till I ran into him at my favorite record store Vital Culture.   And he invited me down to sportsmans to listen to a buch of Dj's playing in a very small room.  I had the best time ever and saw a lot of new inovations being tried by the DJ's.  For this artical I was surfing the web to find mpre info on Hart and  I ran across this information on his MySpace Page.  After seeing many of his shows I have to agree with what I found.

  • "Hard and Driving. Hart's brand of Trance is a breath of fresh air. Wipe away the tears, it's all dark from here on in." -Josh Slivken DC Productions

  • Hart has been shaping the way people view Trance music for the last 5 years in the Twin Cities. Rolling in with dark hard percussive sounds, followed by sweeping trance melodies, Hart has been fortunate enough to play at almost every spot Minneapolis has to offer.

  • He has opened for and played shows with the likes of Eddie Halliwell, Dieselboy, Ferry Corsten, Armin Van Buuren, Richard Humpty Vission, Marco V, Chris Liebing, Judge Jules, and more.

  • After having a three year stint with local electronic music promotion group Sound in Motion, Hart's popularity around the city has risen. His opportunities with this company have lead to him booking/promoting/ and managing.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself...
I am 26 years old and I am currently living in Minneapolis, MN, I grew up in Bemidji, MN (I don't really recommend visiting there unless you really like walleyes), I really love punk/rock/hardcore/metal and other forms of music, I've been juggling since I was in the 6th grade, and I love me some Chiptole...
2. How did it all begin for you...
I saw a magical movie called Hackers. The first time I heard "Cowgirl" from Underworld I fell in love with electronic music. I really, really got into Prodigy, Underworld, Chemical Brothers, etc. then I started to get into punk rock and the electronic music fell by the wayside. It wasn't until a trip to Germany in my senior year of high school that I found electronic dance music and started to dig into the DJ culture a little more. Ever since then I have been playing music. It will be eight years this August that I have been DJing.

3. You have been an active Dj and a leading figure in the Local Minneapolis scene for many years, Have you thought about going into the studio?

I have thought about the studio a lot. I just recently bought a new laptop so I really don't have an excuse not too. Despite what some would say I really do believe that you need to produce to "make it" on a global
level. I am interested in it and hopefully in the future it will come to fruition.
4. If you could live in anyplace on earth, where will it be?

Either Denver, CO or somewhere in California. I really want to at least travel to Australia. I know I'm kind of boring, but oh well right?
5. How has the House/Trance/DnB scene changed throughout the years?

Well a lot always changes. Producers change, DJs change, the sound changes, people come and go. I feel very fortunate to be able to play music all of the time. I know for me my tastes have changed a ton over the last couple of years. As I have matured I think the music that I am into is just a little deeper than it was a few years back. I think anyone who has heard my mixes throughout the years can really tell that is the case.
As far as the over all general genre of electronic music is concerned, it goes through as many changes as pop music. All DJ's no matter if you play house/techno/trance/minimal/ or whatever always change with the times. Some people I guess just kind of fall out of it all.
6. What are the positive and negative aspects reflected by these above mentioned changes?

Well I guess as a positive it weeds out a lot of people who do this for reasons that I don't really care about. There are a lot of folks who want to DJ because they want to look cool or because they think they will get laid or whatever. That has never really been my train of thought. I've always loved performing and I have always loved making people happy through this medium so for me the changes are always great and welcomed.
I just recently made the switch from playing cds to playing on Traktor.  This has given me a new found love for electronic music and DJing altogether.
I can't really think of too many negatives. I guess the only one would be is seeing really great DJs from years ago not evolve with the times and they get lost in the shuffle. I know some guys who I really enjoyed seeing a couple of years ago but their taste never really moved past what they were into at that point. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, what they are into is what they're into, but I don't really get to see a lot of quality sets from them anymore...

7. What do you feel are the criteria's one should obtain in order to make it in this business?

Always do good business. Hands down, end of story. Always be good to people. Don't be a prick, don't lie, keep your promises, and make sure if someone is helping you out make sure they are taken care of.
8. Describe the most rocking stage you played on...

Hm, I'm not really sure. There have been so many fun parties over the years. I love playing big rooms to a lot of people, but the small room shows with 1-200 people are always the best. It's always so intimate and the energy is always there. I love being able to high five someone over the table. Good times.
9. If you could change one thing about this world what will it be?

I really will have to think about that one. I'll get back to you on that.

10. Words of Wisdom?

My word of wisdom is if you are close to me you have probably heard me say this before, I know it will sound a little cheesy but just hang in there with me. DJs, the next time you play a rad gig, take a second, put the headphones down let the track play for a second and just look at the crowd, and take in the moment.  For me at least, that is the greatest thing in the world that I could be doing, so please if you DJ or if you do anything else that you love, take a moment to realize just how awesome it is.
Hart has just released his second Raise the Dead mix.  If you would like to download it, you can do so.
Hart, I want ot thank you for taking the time to do this with me.  I have been to many of your shows and your always awsome.  For those following my blog when I hear of new shows I will try to get them here first.

Dr Taylor Radio Show on

On Monday nights, January 18th "Martin Luther King Day" show on After Hours Djs I had a great time spinning some of my favorite tracks. Those people in the chat room there really liked the tracks,  I didn't get much reaction from those that follow me in Twitter so I was not sure who was listening. I had titled the show "MLK Tribute or What a Messed Up World", The reason was I started with Martin Luther Kings's speech of "I have a dream" and about 3 min into it I started Backdraft which has kind of a siren type sound giving it a very strange feel since we all know the out come of his life.  I played the complete speach over Backdraft, I just love how it sounds.  I then rolled into "Idiots" which to me is a very humorous song along with "Everything in America". I kind of ended that story line with Future Funk Squad's "About to Fall". The rest of the songs are some of my favorite songs that really need to be played loud. If you listened to the show drop me a line and let me know what you thought.

Here are the tracks
Martin Luther King\ "I Have a Dream"
DJ Ralph 'n' Jo\Backdraft 8'40"
Vandal-Idiots (Audiojack Remix) [Lot49]
Ryan Riback-Everything In America (Luki Remix) [Vinyl Pusher]
Future Funk Squad \ About to Fall (With Beatman & Ludmilla \ About to Fall
Ocean Drive Club Mix
The Prodigy \ Warrior's Dance \Warrior's Dance (Future Funk Squad
Green Velvet \ Flash b2
Bassbin Twins \ Adrenaline ltd - this
The Crystal Method \ Divided By Night \ Double Down Under
